Knowing how to properly size your kid’s tennis shoes will not only prevent injuries but enhance performance on the court. If you’re not able to come to one of our stores to speak with our Experts this guide will give you the tools you need to ensure your kid’s shoes fit properly.

Merchant of Tennis Rule of Thumb

For junior shoes, we look for up to a thumb’s-width of space between the end of the child’s longest toe to the end of the shoe. This gives a proper fit while allowing for growing space. If your child is a high performance player, you can err on the small side, with half a thumb’s-width of space. They will likely be wearing out their shoes faster than they grow out of them. It’s important to ensure that your child’s heel is pressed up against the back of the shoe for a proper fitting.

If you are having trouble determining where the end of the child’s toe is in the shoe, another good trick is to remove the shoe’s insole (this is easy to do on most, but not all junior shoes) and have the child stand on it with their heel all the way at the back of the in-sole. Done this way, you should be able to tell the amount of space they will have at the front of the shoe.
